Application: Hydrocyclone is mainly used for classification and concentration in the beneficiation of metal ores such as iron, copper, lead, zinc, and lithium; desludging or ultra-fine classification of non-metallic ores such as quartz sand, kaolin, and barite; and can also remove fine mud on the surface of minerals or concentrate and dehydrate.

introduction of Hydrocyclone

The hydrocyclone is a common mining classification equipment that uses centrifugal force to accelerate the sedimentation of ore particles. It is mostly used for grading operations in the second stage of closed-circuit grinding, and is sometimes used for mud dehydration to obtain very fine overflow products. We can also customize multiple hydrocyclones to form a group to improve classification efficiency. The hydrocyclone can quickly achieve classification and concentration, dehydration, washing, and de-sludging. It has the advantages of high separation efficiency, small size, and simple maintenance, and is widely used in mining, chemical industry, and environmental protection fields.

The hydrocyclone can be configured as a hydrocyclone group/unit, which saves space and increases processing capacity. It can achieve efficient solid-liquid separation, particle size classification, or density sorting through high-speed swirling centrifugal force. 

It is often used in a closed-circuit system with a ball mill to control the particle size of the ground product. For example, it is key equipment for closed-circuit grinding, tailings concentrating, and heavy media separation in gold, copper, spodumene, quartz sand, talc, and other mineral processing plants.

Working Principle

The structure of the hydrocyclone is relatively simple. Its upper end is a cylindrical part, and its lower part is a conical container.
The slurry is fed into the cyclone at a certain speed (generally 5 to 12 meters per second) along the tangential direction, and obtains a rotary motion, thus generating a large centrifugal force (usually tens of times or even hundreds of times greater than gravity) . Under the action of centrifugal force, the coarser particles are thrown toward the wall of the vessel and move downwards with a spiral track, which is discharged from the grit nozzle to become coarse-grained products; the finer particles and most of the water are in the spiral path, discharge from the flow tube.

Structural features

  • Feed inlet: Tangentially oriented, ensuring high-speed swirl flow.
  • Cylinder (upper section): Cylindrical structure for stable fluid flow.
  • Cone (lower section): The cone angle is typically 10°-20°, affecting separation accuracy and efficiency.
    Bottom flow outlet (sand discharge outlet): Discharges coarse particles or high-density materials.
  • No moving parts: Relies on swirl motion to achieve separation.
