Introduction Of Pneumatic Percussion Drill

A pneumatic percussion drill is an impact-type rock drilling tool powered by compressed air; models equipped with an air-leg support are also available. Consequently, it is often referred to as an air-powered rock drill, pneumatic jackleg drill, or air-leg rock breaker. The unit itself lacks an internal power source and requires an external air compressor to supply compressed air, along with necessary accessories such as air hoses, line oilers, drill rods, and drill bits. This pneumatic rock drill is typically designed for horizontal or inclined borehole operations in medium-hard to hard rocks, including common minerals such as granite, limestone, and sandstone.

Compared to hydraulic and electric rock drills:

Pneumatic rock drills generate no electrical sparks or high-temperature components during operation, making them exceptionally safe and reliable for use in flammable or explosive environments, such as underground coal mines. With a simple structure, lightweight design, low cost, high maneuverability, and excellent explosion-proof capabilities, they offer the most economical drilling solution for medium-to-shallow holes, small diameters, and high-risk underground environments.

Core Application Scenarios:

  • Underground mine drifting and drilling: Drilling blast holes for stopes and roadways.
  • Highway and railway tunnel excavation: Drilling blast holes and rock-bolt holes for initial support.
  • Hydraulic and hydroelectric sites: Drilling holes for rock bolts and blasting in water diversion tunnels and powerhouse caverns.
  • Quarry stone splitting: Drilling splitting holes to facilitate the extraction of various types of stone.
  • Roadbed slope stabilization: Drilling holes for slope rock bolts and rock foundation treatment.

principle & structure Of Pneumatic Percussion Drill

Working Principle

The core operating principle of a pneumatic rock drill is “impact breaking.” A control valve automatically switches the airflow based on pressure changes within the cylinder, directing compressed air alternately into the front and rear chambers to drive the piston in a reciprocating motion. As the piston advances rapidly, it violently strikes the drill bit shank, transmitting the impact force through the drill rod to the drill bit tip. The drill bit, like a chisel, repeatedly strikes the rock surface, continuously creating cracks and causing the rock to peel and break apart layer by layer. Simultaneously, a rotation mechanism turns the drill rod by a certain angle so that each impact strikes a fresh section of the rock, preventing repeated blows to the same spot. Rock debris generated during the process is flushed out of the hole by high-pressure water or compressed air delivered through the center of the drill rod, resulting in a uniform, circular borehole.

Structure Of Pneumatic Percussion Drill

Structural Features

  1. Impact mechanism: Composed of a cylinder, piston, and air distribution valve; converts compressed air into kinetic impact energy.
  2. Rotation mechanism: Uses a ratchet and spiral rod to drive the drill rod’s rotation, enabling the combined action of impact and rotation to break rock.
  3. Cuttings removal mechanism: Delivers water or air through the center of the drill rod to flush out rock debris from the bottom of the hole.
  4. Control system: Centrally controls impact, rotation, and feed operations, facilitating the adjustment of drilling parameters.
  5. Air-leg support: Provides auxiliary feed force and supports the machine body, counteracting recoil and reducing physical exertion.
  6. Drilling tool system: Includes the drill rod and drill bit (chisel, cross, or button types); responsible for direct contact with and fragmentation of the rock formation.
  7. Lubrication and silencing device: Automatically lubricates moving parts and suppresses exhaust noise.

features & Advantages

  • High Safety: Powered entirely by compressed air, with no electrical sparks or high-temperature components; ideal for flammable, explosive, or hazardous coal mine and underground environments.
  • Lightweight Design: Suitable for handheld operation or use with an air leg; adaptable to confined spaces and frequent relocation between drilling sites.
  • Resilient in Harsh Conditions: Operates reliably in damp, dusty, and off-grid underground tunnel environments.
  • Cost-Effective: Low initial purchase price, manageable maintenance costs, and high parts interchangeability deliver excellent cost-efficiency per meter drilled.
  • Flexible Drilling Angles: When paired with an air leg, it can drill blast holes and anchor holes at various angles, including horizontal, inclined, and vertically upward.
  • Simple Maintenance: Features a modular design with a low failure rate; routine maintenance requires only cleaning the air lines and replenishing lubricant.
  • Efficient Rock Breaking: Combines high-frequency impact with rotation for rapid penetration of medium-hard to hard rock formations.
  • Anti-Jamming Protection: A drill-rod clamping protection mechanism allows for rapid reversal or retraction if the bit jams in hard rock, reducing the risk of equipment damage.
  • Easy to Operate: Features a centralized control handle for responsive startup and intuitive operation; users can become proficient with minimal training.
